Colnago: Italian bicycle history on two wheels
Colnago is one of those bicycle brands that stirs something special in many cycling enthusiasts. The name is associated with Italian craftsmanship, beautiful details and road bicycles that have left their mark on professional cycle sport for decades.
The story began in 1954, when Ernesto Colnago opened a small bicycle workshop in the town of Cambiago near Milan. Here he repaired and built bicycles with a keen interest in both craftsmanship and a good riding experience. The small workshop later developed into one of Italy’s most respected bicycle brands.

Colnago
Ernesto Colnago developed a close connection to the professional cycling world early on, working as a mechanic for some of the greatest riders of the time. Experience from the road was put to use back in the workshop, where the bicycles were continually improved. Colnago has therefore always had a natural connection between traditional craftsmanship and the ambition to create bicycles that work when it really matters.
Colnago bicycles with a truly distinctive look
It is hard to mistake a classic Colnago for just any other bicycle. The brand is known for its elegant frames, distinctive paintwork and beautiful details. Many models have bold colours and decorations that make the bicycles just as interesting to look at as they are to ride.
Over the years, Colnago has created several iconic road bicycles. Models such as Super, Mexico and Master are now regarded as classics and are still sought after by collectors and cyclists alike. Later, Colnago also became known for working with new materials and modern bicycle design without losing the brand’s Italian identity.
A bicycle you want to look after
A classic Colnago is not only interesting because of the brand on the frame. It is often the overall combination that makes the bicycle special. The shape of the frame, the paintwork and the many small details say something about the era the bicycle comes from.
Many older Colnago bicycles have been well looked after over the years, but even a bicycle with clear signs of use can have plenty of potential. With a thorough inspection, new wear parts and the right care, it can once again become a bicycle you want both to ride and to show off.
Some people want to keep the bicycle as original as possible, while others would like to make it more useful for today’s rides. Both approaches can make good sense. The most important thing is to take the individual bicycle as the starting point and preserve the look that makes it special.
Give your old Colnago a new life at ReRide
At ReRide, we like bicycles with a history, and Colnago naturally fits in here. When we restore an older Colnago, we look closely at the bicycle’s condition and assess what should be preserved, repaired or replaced.
